You hate them, but you LOVE them. No matter where you’ve been in the past decade, if you ever played any video games, you’ve definitely come across one of these.  Don’t they just bring back fond childhood memories?

Disclaimer 1: We are not listing them in any particular order.  Whichever game that shows in the list below is due to popularity and number of units sold.  We think all of them are just fun to play with and would love to play them all the time. This is not a list to incite debate, but a list of love, love for those wonderful games that made decades of our lives better.

Disclaimer 2: When we say “childhood” memories, we are not saying that you are old. No, not at all.  As a matter of fact, statistic shows the majority of video gamers today is over the age of 35 years. So if you are over 35, you are part of the video games generation!

Disclaimer 3: This list is not just for men, as a matter of fact, women made up 48% of all gamers!  Men just have a 4 points lead, but who knows, more and more independent gaming studios are popping up targeting women, by the end of this decade, things may change. (hint: candy crush).

Best Selling Video Games – The Sims

At bottom of our list is the famous video game by Maxis The Sims. It took the market by storm at release and even to this day (almost 2 decades) there are many raving fans dedicated to their “sims” online.

The Sims is a 2000 strategic life-simulation video game developed by Maxis and published by Electronic Arts. It is a simulation of the daily activities of one or more virtual people (“Sims”) in a suburban household near a fictional city. The game’s development was led by game designer Will Wright who is also known for developing the SimCity series. The Sims original series had a total of seven expansion packs produced, with expansions adding new items, characters, skins, and features. The game has had several subsequent sequels; The Sims 2, The Sims 3 and The Sims 4. (Wikipedia)

Best Selling Video Games – Wii Fit

The units sold number for this video game may be a bit misleading, but between the Wii Fit and the Wii Fit Plus, total units sold are around 40 Million.  Making this game as popular as the original Super Mario, the iconic video game that made Nintendo famous.

Wii Fit (Wiiフィット Wī Fitto) is an exergaming video game designed by Nintendo’s Hiroshi Matsunaga for the Wii home video game console. It is an exercise game consisting of activities using the Wii Balance Board peripheral.  The game uses a unique platform peripheral called the Wii Balance Board, on which the player stands during exercise. The game features yoga, strength training, aerobics, and balance games. Matsunaga described the game as a “way to help get families exercising together”. Wii Fit has been used for physiotherapy rehabilitation and has been adopted by various health clubs around the world. Additionally, the game has been used in nursing homes to improve posture in the elderly. The game has received generally positive reviews, despite criticism over the lack of intensity in some of its workout activities. (Wikipedia)

Best Selling Video Games – Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (stylized as Call of Duty: MW3) is a first-person shooter video game, developed by Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games, with assistance from Raven Software, and published by Activision. It is the third and final installment in the Modern Warfare saga, a direct sequel to 2009’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, and the eighth Call of Duty installment. The game was released worldwide in November 2011 on Microsoft Windows, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii, with a separate version for Nintendo DS developed by n-Space. Treyarch developed the game’s Wii port. In Japan, Square Enix handled the installment with a separate subtitled and dubbed version, as they did for Call of Duty: Black Ops. It is also the last Call of Duty game for the Wii (Wikipedia).

This game broke all sales records and it sold 6.5 Million copies in the U.S. and UK within 24 hours of release.  Total revenue is over 400 million dollars, making it the biggest launch of all time…

Best Selling Video Games – Diablo III

Diablo III is a hack-n-slash action role-playing video game developed and published by Blizzard Entertainment. It is the third installment in the Diablo franchise and was released in the Americas, Europe, South Korea, and Taiwan on May 15, 2012, and Russia on June 7, 2012, for Microsoft Windows and macOS. A console version was released for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on September 3, 2013. Versions for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One were released on August 19, 2014 (Wikipedia).

This video game title sold 3.5 million copies in the first 24 hours of its release, over 12 million were sold during the year.  This is one of the best selling games of the hack-n-slash genre.

Best Selling Video Games – The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is an open world action role-playing video game developed by Bethesda Game Studios and published by Bethesda Softworks. It is the fifth main installment in The Elder Scrolls series, following The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, and was released worldwide for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on November 11, 2011 (Wikipedia).

This game has multiple DLC (downloadable contents) and sold 7 million copies in its first week, and 30 million across all platforms. This is one of the best action RPG (Role Playing Game) of all time.

Best Selling Video Games – Gameboy Pokemon Blue & Red Versions

Pokémon Red Version and Blue Version are role-playing video games developed by Game Freak and published by Nintendo for the Game Boy. They are the first installments of the Pokémon series. They were first released in Japan in 1996 as Red and Green. “Blue” was released later in the year as a special edition. They were later released as Red and Blue in North America, Europe, and Australia over the following three years. Pokémon Yellow, a special edition version, was released roughly a year later. Red and Green have subsequently been remade for the Game Boy Advance as Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, released in 2004 (Wikipedia).

What’s interesting about the Pokemon Gameboy is the debut of multiplayer options, which gave birth of the concept of trading. As a matter of fact, Pokemon is considered as the best selling RPG of all time, if you consider the various versions of Pokemon based game.

Best Selling Video Games – Wii Mario Cart

Mario Kart Wii (マリオカートWii Mario Kāto Wī) is a racing video game developed and published by Nintendo for the Wii video game console. It is the sixth installment in the Mario Kart series and was released worldwide in April 2008.  Like its previous installments of games, Mario Kart Wii incorporates playable characters from the Mario series, who participate in kart races on various race tracks using specialized items to hinder opponents or gain advantages.

The game features multiple single-player and multiplayer game modes. Online multiplayer via Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection was available at launch but was discontinued in May 2014, along with Wii and Nintendo DS games that supported online play (Wikipedia).

Wii Mario Kart sold 2 million copies in its first week and went up against other blockbuster games such as Grand Theft Auto V and hold its own in 4th place.  Mario Kart is the best selling Mario game for the Wii.

Best Selling Video Games – SNES Super Mario Bros

Super Mario Bros. is a platform video game developed and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo Entertainment System home console. Released as a sequel to the 1983 game Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. was released in Japan and North America in 1985, and in Europe and Australia two years later. In Super Mario Bros., the player controls Mario and in a two-player game, a second player controls Mario’s brother Luigi as he travels through the Mushroom Kingdom in order to rescue Princess Toadstool from the antagonist Bowser.
Super Mario Bros. was critically acclaimed. In 2005, a poll by IGN named the “pioneering” and “highly influential” title as the “greatest game of all time”, considering it to have aided in resurrecting the crashed American video game market of the 1980s. The game’s mid-1980s release served to further popularize the side-scrolling subgenre of the already popular platform video game genre of the early 1980s (Wikipedia).

Little known fact about Mario is that he is an Italian, created by Japanese, speaks English (Here we go!), jumps really high like an Olympian, loves gold coins, and has a pet dinosaur (Yoshi).

Best Selling Video Games – Grand Theft Auto V

Grand Theft Auto V is an action-adventure video game developed by Rockstar North and published by Rockstar Games. It was released on 17 September 2013 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, on 18 November 2014 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and on 14 April 2015 for Microsoft Windows. It is the first main entry in the Grand Theft Auto series since 2008’s Grand Theft Auto IV. Set within the fictional state of San Andreas, based on Southern California, the single-player story follows three criminals and their efforts to commit heists while under pressure from a government agency. The open world design lets players freely roam San Andreas’ open countryside and the fictional city of Los Santos, based in Los Angeles (Wikipedia).

GTA5 broke market sales target and grossed $800 million on its first day and over a billion in its first 3 weeks.  No matter what your opinion is on GTA5, this video game has set some impressive records.

Best Selling Video Games – Wii Sports

Wii Sports (Wii スポーツ Wī Supōtsu) is a 2006 sports video game developed and published by Nintendo as a launch title for the Wii video game console. The game was first released in North America along with the Wii on November 19, 2006, and was released in Japan, Australia, and Europe the following month. It was included as a pack-in game with the Wii console in all territories except Japan and South Korea, making it the first game included with the launch of a Nintendo system since Mario’s Tennis for the Virtual Boy in 1995. Wii Sports is now available on its own as part of the Nintendo Selects collection of games and is no longer a pack-in game for the Wii (Wikipedia).

This video game has set an even more impressive record as it’s only available for the Nintendo Wii platform and presently is the best selling game for the Wii.  It is also the third best selling game of all time.

Best Selling Video Games – Minecraft

Minecraft is a sandbox video game created and designed by Swedish game designer Markus “Notch” Persson, and later fully developed and published by Mojang. The creative and building aspects of Minecraft enable players to build constructions out of textured cubes in a 3D procedurally generated world. Other activities in the game include exploration, resource gathering, crafting, and combat.

Multiple gameplay modes are available, including a survival mode where the player must acquire resources to build the world and maintain health, a creative mode where players have unlimited resources to build with and the ability to fly, an adventure mode where players can play custom maps created by other players, and a spectator mode where players can freely move throughout a world without being affected by gravity or collisions. The PC version of the game is noted for its modding scene, where a dedicated community creates new gameplay mechanics, items, and assets for the game (Wikipedia).

Mojang and Minecraft were later bought by Microsoft Corporation for 2.5 billion dollars.  As of early 2017, 122 million copies of Minecraft have been sold across all platforms.

Best Selling Video Games – Tetris

Tetris (Russian: Те́трис, pronounced [ˈtɛtrʲɪs]) is a tile-matching puzzle video game, originally designed and programmed by Russian game designer Alexey Pajitnov. It was released on June 6, 1984, while he was working for the Dorodnitsyn Computing Centre of the Academy of Science of the Soviet Union in Moscow. He derived its name from the Greek numerical prefix tetra- (all of the game’s pieces contain four segments) and tennis, Pajitnov’s favorite sport.

Tetris was the first entertainment software to be exported from the Soviet Union to the US, where it was published by Spectrum HoloByte for Commodore 64 and IBM PC. The Tetris game is a popular use of tetrominoes, the four-element special case of polyominoes. Polyominoes have been used in popular puzzles since at least 1907, and the name was given by the mathematician Solomon W. Golomb in 1953. However, even the enumeration of pentominoes is dated to antiquity.

The game (or one of its many variants) is available for nearly every video game console and computer operating system, as well as on devices such as graphing calculators, mobile phones, portable media players, PDAs, Network music players and even as an Easter egg on non-media products like oscilloscopes. It has even inspired Tetris serving dishes and been played on the sides of various buildings (Wikipedia).

Tetris hit it big after it made to Nintendo’s Gameboy handheld console in 1989. It became the most popular game ever. It has a reach of over 170 million devices, making it the number 1 best-seller of all time.
